Building to educate
A much quoted Swedish wisdom is: „A child has three teachers: the first teacher is the other children, the second teacher is the teacher, and the third teacher is the room. Pupils learn best where learning is fun – the demands on school construction are correspondingly high. The further development of educational concepts and new didactic approaches are changing everyday life in schools and thus also the functional and aesthetic qualities of this construction task.
Classrooms and common areas, both indoors and outdoors, are becoming increasingly flexible and multifunctional. The concepts include retreats for individual learning opportunities and zones for concentrated work as well as open spatial landscapes for inter-year group activities and self-organised group activities. The current school projects presented in this volume show how contemporary pedagogy is translated into convincing and very different architecture.
